Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is the transformational technology upon which the utility of the future will be built. Customers will choose from a range of options that will provide for responsive demand and cost minimization on both sides of the meter. Utilities will respond to outages, manage their demand, optimize their distribution networks and control their costs in ways never before possible.
The impact of AMI crosses departmental boundaries and challenges organizations to respond to AMI opportunities in a way that provides maximum value to the organization and to its customers, both in the present and in years to come. Such far-reaching impacts must be approached with care, however. Meter data management systems must handle and automate tasks such as VEE on an exponentially greater volume of data. Business processes must be reviewed and updated to reflect the interdepartmental interactions and relationships that AMI demands. Open standards such as ANSI C.22 and ZigBee (among others) for data communications and premises networking should be observed for meter data communications, HANS and PANS to allow for flexibility in future applications and innovations. Meter capabilities for functions such as HAN communications, remote connect/disconnect, direct load control, tamper detection, must be considered from the standpoint of day-to-day business process as well as IT, networking and metering infrastructure to ensure workable results.
